What they are building
Santa Barbara company. Its headset reads EEG while the wearer looks at items shown in augmented reality, and turns the selection into speech or text; the company's release names a classifier of steady-state visually evoked potentials, the brain's response to a flickering target. It is aimed at people who can no longer speak or move enough to use other aids.

Where they are clinically
Feasibility
Small early studies that test safety and whether the device can do what it is meant to.
Two registered studies of ten participants each; neither has reported. An FDA Breakthrough designation is not a clearance.
Access today
Clinical study
Accessible only by enrolling in a registered clinical study.
- Shown in people
- Nothing published. Ten people with late-stage ALS are being enrolled in its first registered study.
- Still an aim
- Conversation at a usable pace from EEG, with generative AI composing from few selections.
- What stands in the way
- Information rate: EEG yields few choices at a time, and no result is published yet.
On record here: 0 peer-reviewed papers
This technology remains experimental and is not an established treatment. Access is limited to registered clinical studies.
- 4 May 2023US FDA — Breakthrough Device designation. A designation speeds interaction with the regulator. It is not a clearance or approval.
Why this company matters
Cognixion tests how far a non-invasive BCI can go for the people implants are being built for. It asks nothing surgical of someone with late-stage ALS, and by the company's account it uses generative AI to compose from few selections. That is also the open question: no result is published, and the comparison that matters is with the eye tracking many of these users already have as much as with implants.
Key milestones
Oct 2025
A second study, pairing the software with Apple Vision Pro, is registered; ten participants planned, not yet recruiting.
20 Jan 2025
A longitudinal study in people with late-stage ALS begins recruiting in Santa Barbara; ten participants planned.
4 May 2023
FDA Breakthrough Device designation for the Cognixion ONE Axon headset, according to the company.

Families found for Cognixion in the EPO’s worldwide database, grouped so that one invention counts once. A filing shows what a company sought to protect. It does not show that the technology was built, is in a product, or works in people, and themes are read from titles, abstracts and classes, not from the claims. How to read this
