Where information comes from

Sources

The order in which we trust sources, and what each can and cannot tell you.

Source hierarchy

Peer-reviewed publications, read at the level of the published abstract and paper. Clinical registries such as ClinicalTrials.gov for what a study is and its status. Regulatory databases and decisions. Official company statements, labelled as company reported. Independent reporting by news and trade publications. Official repositories and documentation for software and datasets.

What a source can support

A registry record establishes that a study exists and its registered design; it does not establish results. A regulatory designation establishes that a regulator will engage closely with a device; it is not a clearance. A company announcement establishes what a company says. We keep these distinctions visible.

Verification states

Each source shows whether it was opened and checked against the claim, identified but not opened, or recorded from editorial knowledge and still awaiting a check. The date of the check is shown.
